Usually, breakouts and blemishes are treated with products that aim to strip the oil from the skin. Unfortunately, this approach can actually make them worse. The skin’s protective barrier is made of several things, including both sebum and water. If this barrier is stripped away, then the water within the skin is able to escape, leading to trans epidermal water loss, which leaves the skin dehydrated and open to attack from the outside. To try and counter this, the skin produces extra oil to try and make up the difference and starts the vicious cycle of breakouts.
